Overview

The Transportation Manager oversees all aspects of scheduling/ routing functions for the U.S. Ply Gem Windows Division including Simonton Windows. The scope includes the inbound and outbound freight for 11 manufacturing/ assembly locations across the U.S. This position has full responsibility of all 3PL routing relationships and provides leadership/ support to the plants regarding all routing/ transportation functions. The Manager has primary responsibility for ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of our transportation network and monitoring our network for consistently meeting company and customer requirements, and is always prepared to support our growth initiatives.

Responsibilities

  1. Develop & execute a strategic plan for the U.S. Windows/ Simonton Central Routing transportation group.
  2. Identify best practices for routing and ensure consistent absorption across all locations.
  3. Introduces and manages KPIs that measure cost efficiencies and operational performance versus targets, including performance trends.
  4. Holds weekly operational calls with our 3PL partners within each manufacturing facility to ensure alignment & strategy is being executed upon.
  5. Identify IT enhancements that enable operational efficiencies, and achieve cost savings targets established by Director.
  6. Provide direct oversight of the Central Routing Team and manage the relationship with our 3rd party transportation provider. This includes inbound and outbound, imports/exports, expedited freight, and special transportation requirements as needed.
  7. This position collaborates with our 3PL provider and internal stakeholders on continuous improvement initiatives that result in high performing processes and operational excellence.
  8. Determine the best tool requirements to enable lowest cost and optimal performance within the transportation function across all locations.
  9. Provides problem solving expertise and guidance to the manufacturing facilities on any transportation related issues. Ensures proper procedures are established and provides training as required.
  10. Develops good relationships with plant management staff, peers, and senior management to facilitate a collaborative, high performing environment.
  11. Works with the plant teams to improve safety as it relates to the transportation and warehousing function. Assists with investigations to determine root cause and corrective action.
  12. Performs other duties as required by the Director of Transportation/ Logistics.

Qualifications

Education

B.S. degree in Supply Chain, Business, Management or related discipline

 

Experience

    • 5 -10 years of transportation management experience in a manufacturing environment, with strong systems knowledge in regard to transportation network routing/ optimization
    • Operational experience with managing 3PLs for multiple sites required.  National scope preferred.
    • Capable of leading problem solving activities, building strong relationships and communicating effectively (verbal/written)
    • Proven record of achieving operational targets
    • Travel ~ 20%

 

Skills/Abilities

    • Appian Routing Software, PC Miler, Other Routing Tool Knowledge
    • PC literate - competence in Microsoft, Word, Excel and Access
    • Working knowledge and experience in various ERP platforms
    • In-depth experience in continuous improvement and operational excellence, process improvement, process standardization
    • Ability to analyze transportation and financial data to identify improvement opportunities
