  • Overview

    Develop both strategy and tactics to obtain assigned direct materials at the lowest possible cost while fully meeting company specifications and quality requirements.  Control the selection of suppliers and the purchase of direct materials to support the product application and manufacturing operating environment(s) with no shortages across the company's manufacturing footprint. Develop and execute appropriate negotiations/strategies to drive supplier behavior. Purchase capital and expense items at the minimum cost which will meet schedule and application requirements.

    Responsibilities

    1. Buyer is responsible for supplier identification and selection; agreement negotiation/management; logistics; PN management/optimization; etc. for assigned areas while obtaining direct materials at the lowest possible cost on ongoing basis while fully meeting Ply Gem’s specification and quality requirements across Ply Gem companies.
    2. May manage material inventory levels by overseeing shipment of materials against blanket purchase orders in a JIT environment. Coordinate with plant personnel on requirements to ensure sufficient quantities of material is available for production requirements while minimizing excess inventory.
    3. May have matrixed organizational responsibilities for commodity team performance.
    4. Responsible for driving/achieving Ply Gem cost savings goals - aggressive recovery of underlying cost movements from suppliers.
    5. Create a bid schedule by commodity to effectively work the competitive bid process throughout the organization.
    6. Develop/ Revise supplier selection criteria (preferred vendor list) for key vendors. May require collaboration with peers and/or Ply Gem sites for consistency.
    7. Monitoring and analysis of trends affecting assigned commodity markets (raw material prices, exchange rates, competitive actions, etc.). Collaborate/Communicate with peers and/or Ply Gem sites to ensure visibility and compliance.
    8. Survey, analyze and develop new cost competitive sources. This includes identifying and developing new vendors for the supply of existing material/services as well as sourcing alternative material/services supplied by vendors.
    9. Work with vendors, R&D (where applicable) and production personnel to develop and implement cost reductions strategies and methods. This may include qualifying new materials, inventory positions, lead times, lot size, and logistical solutions from existing and new vendors.
    10. Develop a process to control/approve cost changes for all relevant Ply Gem locations. Interface with accounting to determine payment schedules, ensure adherence to agreed upon terms and conditions and help trouble shoot irregularities in the payment process.
    11. Implement/Maintain Supplier Quality Report Card (Price, Quality, On-Time Delivery, Support, etc.
    12. Achieve budgeted Ply Gem cost savings goals.
    13. May be assigned ECR/ECO (Engineering Change Request/Order) implementation management 
    14. Implement contract agreements, including Terms and Conditions, to lock-in favorable prices, guarantee delivery and effect favorable payment terms.
    15. Perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

     

    Education

    Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in a Business or technical discipline.

     

    Experience

    Three to five years of exempt level purchasing responsibilities, or the equivalent, in a manufacturing environment.

     

    Skills/Abilities

    Effective oral and written communications skills.  Proficiency in personal computers/word processing, spreadsheets/databases, and relevant software packages.  Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective, professional relationships with a comparable vendor base. Knowledge of purchasing policies and procedures required.

     

    Knowledge

    Knowledge of corporate and governmental purchasing policies and procedures required.

     

    Other
